As part of West Virginia, which is dubbed as "The Mountain State", Wyoming County has various sights to offer -- wild mountains, brooks and woodlands. Aside from these, Wyoming is also home to various towns that are economically progressive and full of natural wonders. One of the progressive and beautiful towns in Wyoming is Oceana.

Geography and climate of Oceana

Oceana encompasses a land area of 3.5 square kilometres. As part of West Virginia, Oceana has humid continental climate. Winters in Oceana range from moderate to cold, while summers are warm to mild.

Name derivation and history of Oceana

The first settlers in the area of Wyoming were the Mound Builders or the Adena people. In 1787, John Cooke, Sr. discovered land near the area of what is now Oceana, making him one of the earliest Europeans to settle in this place. Originally, Oceana's name is Cassville until in 1851, it was changed to Sumpterville. However, in 1853, Tomas Dunn English, a writer and a lawyer who practiced law in the county of Wyoming, persuaded the court to change the name of this place in honor of the youngest daughter of the Mingo Indian chief, Oceana.

Economy of Oceana

Oceana, as part the county of Wyoming, is heavily influenced by the county's economic activities. Two major industries in Oceana and the neighbouring places are mining and agriculture. Coal, natural gas and petroleum are just some of the products that are abundant in Oceana and the surrounding towns in Wyoming. In the agriculture industry, the primary products are beef cattle, livestock, barley, sugar beets, sheep and hogs.

Tourist destinations around Oceana

There are interesting places that surround Oceana. One of these is the Yellowstone National Park. This park was established as early as 1872, making this the first national park in Wyoming. This park is full of rare wildlife species such as grizzly bears, wolves and bison. The breathtaking Twin Falls Resort State Park is another tourist attraction near Oceana. This area is highly preserved because of its natural beauty and historical significance. This park also has various amenities for different activities such as playing golf, shopping, swimming, mountain biking and camping. As a tourist magnet, hotels and various types of accommodations in this park are found nearby.

Another interesting spot near Oceana is the Cheyenne Botanic Garden. This garden is a nine-acre garden beautifully landscaped. The garden contains various species of plants such as those plants native to the area, tropical plants and herbs. The Castle Rock Trailhead in Pineville is also accessible from Oceana. This is part of the Pinnacle Creek Trail, which is a very scenic spot. For tourists who love water activities, the R.D. Bailey Lake is a great place to visit when in Oceana. Covering a 17-mile shoreline, this lake is near Hanover. The lake is also famous as a natural habitat for aquatic wildlife species such as bluegill, largemouth bass, catfish and crappie.
