Tuesday September 20, 1988
The Australian/Vogel 1988 Literary Award was won last night by Sydney writer Tom Flood for his novel Oceana Fine, a murder-mystery which also examines Australian history and literary styles.
Mr Flood, 33, is the son of a boilermaker and union agitator, Les Flood, and the writer Dorothy Hewett. He spent much of his early years in Western Australia where Oceana Fine is set.
He started work on the book in 1986, using a long short story, The Lie of the Land, as its foundation.
The award carries a cash prize of $10,000 and publication of the book next year by Allen & Unwin.
